The Member and Family Assistance Program


What is the Member and Family Assistance Program (MFAP)?


The Member and Family Assistance Program (MFAP) benefit, provided by Kii Health (pronounced “key”), reflects AFBS’ continuing commitment to the physical and emotional well-being of our membership. Through the MFAP, help is available to Members and their Depandantsto assist in resolving the physical and mental challenges that can interfere with their lives and work. You can expect professional, confidential, and timely support for any health, work, or life challenges you and your dependants may be facing.



Benefit Eligibility

All Members and their Dependants, if applicable, who are insured for Extended Health Care benefits have access to the MFAP counselling along with related programs and services.

For the purposes of this section, your dependant(s) are:

  • Your spouse/partner, legal or common-law;
  • Your unmarried biological child, stepchild or legally adopted child;
  • Your grandchild, when living with you and for whom you are providing the majority of financial support.

A common-law spouse/partner is a person who is publicly represented as being your spouse/ partner, and living with you continuously for the past two years (except where otherwise required by provincial legislation).

Children must be:  

  • Under 18 years of age and living at home; or
  • Between the ages of 18 and 26 and attending a recognized college or university on a full-time basis; or
  • Over 18 and incapable of earning a living because of a handicap or disability.

Accessing the Program

Access to the program is available 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, 365-days-a-year via toll-free confidential telephonic access at 1.866.814.0018 or via an online secure web-based portal at kiihealth.ca.

Intake support is provided through nurse-led navigation, offered in English and French with additional languages available through a translation service.

When accessing the services the first time, you will visit kiihealth.ca and set up a basic profile using your personal email address and creating a password. You will need an access code unique to AFBS. Please refer to the ‘Important Information’ section of your insurance statement sent to you on March 1 for your access code information.

Program Details

Member and Family Assistance Program (MFAP)

Get nurse-led navigation and confidential advice to better tackle life’s challenges, including family matters, legal or financial concerns.

Life throws a lot at you, and juggling all your responsibilities can get overwhelming. This program can help you tackle more of it with a wide variety of services:

  • Short-term counselling to help with relationship issues, family problems, stress/anxiety, depression, addiction, and more.
  • Legal advice in areas such as family law, wills, bankruptcy, estate planning, and real estate.
  • Financial advice about budgeting, savings advice, and debt management.
  • Health and wellness advisors can support with nutrition, smoking cessation, better sleep, and mindfulness.
  • Consultations to help with dependent care such as childcare and parenting, adult care and aging, and care for individuals with special needs or disabilities.


Mental Health & Wellness

The right tools to empower you on your mental health journey.

Personal challenges might be impacting your mindset or ability to be your best self. This program provides a wide variety of services to help you feel your best. These services are proven and effective in supporting you through concerns such as:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Depression, trauma and grief
  • Tackling insomnia or reducing substance abuse
  • Coping with chronic pain or illness

You can select from the following options:

Counselling
Short-term counselling

Talk to a counsellor for help with a specific issue or concern, such as family issues, stress, or conflict. Whether you have questions about handling stress at work or school, parenting, or relationship challenges, short-term counselling can support you. Complete a short intake form either online or over the phone led by a nurse, and you will be connected with a therapist that is best suited to address your specific issue. This service is provided over the phone, virtually, or in-person.

MindBeacon™ Guided CBT
6 to 12 week program

This is an online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) program geared to support these mental health concerns: Depression, Stress /Anxiety (General, Social or Health), Trauma and PTSD, Stress, Grief & Loss, Insomnia, Coping with Chronic Pain or Illness and Managing Substance Abuse. CBT is one of the most trusted and proven forms of mental health therapy.

Working directly with a dedicated therapist who will guide you throughout your journey, you'll learn the skills you need to thrive. Each week the CBT program brings new lessons and exercises created by clinical experts, which you can access wherever and whenever it's most convenient for you.

Self-Guided CBT Program
Access anytime, anywhere

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective forms of therapy. The self-guided programs leverage online CBT-based content designed by mental health experts to help you build coping and resiliency skills to manage your mental health.

An online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) program that you can complete at your own pace, your own way.. Our experts have organized the content of each program in order to maximize gains, differing from any other content you’ll find online. Work independently to tackle common concerns like anxiety, low mood, and stress. Combine self-guided programs with other tools and services to support your mental health.

A flexible approach to therapy, you can select your concern and instantly access readings and exercises. Your progress will be saved, so you can pause and continue where you left off anytime.

There are no appointments or 'talking’ required As part of your ongoing recovery you can send secure messages to your therapist on the Kii platform whenever something is on your mind, and they'll get back to you within two business days.

Medical Care

Virtual Medicine
Access medical professionals for virtual consultations, prescriptions, lab requisitions, infant/child medical care, specialist referrals, and more.

Skip the waiting room and get your health concerns addressed from the comfort of your home. This service is available 365 days a year. Monday to Friday 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. EST and on Saturday and Sundays and holidays from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST.

You will have access to a team of medical care professionals including Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)/Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs).

This service is not an emergency medical service. All such medical emergencies will be redirected to appropriate publicly available emergency services. This service cannot prescribe controlled medications such as narcotics. Some complex chronic diseases that are under the care of a specialist with ongoing active follow ups may not be suitable for medical care visits.
